One of the most surprising things about Rugby is that, despite the apparent violence and brutality of the sport, the players and mostly the fans are very calm. It has often been described as a ‘thugs game played by gentlemen’. Maybe this is because the emphasis is on ability and teamwork within this sport, more so than in many others. Although in sports such as cricket and football there is a team aspect involved, in Rugby it is all the more important because a player cannot just pick up the ball and run down the pitch. This is a sport where the opposing team are perfectly within their rights to ram him to the ground, not dance around trying to kick the ball out from between his feet. Teamwork and comradeship are vitally important, allowing the team to play to the best of its ability whilst also utilising the individual skills of its players. This united attitude on the pitch appears to break over into the stands.

The myth goes that Rugby started when William Webb Ellis, a student at Rugby School, picked up the ball during a game of football and ran with it, in 1823. When asked why he had broken the rules, William insisted he hadn’t and had, in fact, created a whole new sport. Within 50 years written rules would be set down for the new sport and the rest, as they say, is history. But it would be senseless to presume that’s all that Rugby is, football in your hands.
The game is a complex one; ask anyone who watches it or plays it and you’ll see. The rules are entirely different to those of its ‘mother sport’. There are many different associations set up, as many tournaments as you’ll find in any other sport. Most well known are the 6 Nations and Rugby League, but there are many others, both professional and amateur, to give the keen supporter something to wet his appetite.
This friendly atmosphere also means this is a good environment for those wishing to place a bet. Though there is excitement during the game, there is rarely catcalling or abuse from one team to another, and it is easy to open up a discussion about the chances of one team or the other. Placing a bet in this environment takes careful consideration, Rugby is like any other sport in that, but it is a little more relaxed and calm. Take away the distractions that you will find in most other sports, and you will find yourself making a better decision. The better your decision, the better your chances and the greater your enjoyment. And, just like William Webb Ellis in 1823, it’s not cheating, just a whole different way of going about things.
